Mitt Romney’s Post-Cancer Prognosis

As the major political players shuffle around in the wake of the current chaos in the Trump administration, we’re seeing many members of congress deciding to retire and move on with other things, rather than face the upcoming mid-term elections. Orrin Hatch, who has served for many years as the Republican Senator in Utah, is now leaving office, and this move has motivated former presidential candidate Mitt Romney to run for the open seat. All of this has put extra emphasis on the state of Romney’s health, as the former governor recently underwent prostate surgery.

An Expert in Prostate Surgery

In a recent article in The Huffington Post, Dr. David Samadi, who is the acting Chair of Urology and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, spoke about the prognosis for Romney after his recent treatment. Romney had surgery for a tumor on his prostate gland, and the cancer appears to have been localized in the area of the gland. This made Romney a good candidate for surgery, and by all accounts the procedure went well. It’s Dr. Samadi’s opinion that in a situation like Romney’s, surgery is definitely the best option, rather than radiation. He notes that for many patients, if radiation is used as the first course of treatment, the odds for long-term survival lessen if the cancer later spreads to other areas in the body. A successful surgery can bring the chances of the cancer spreading down significantly, which will greatly improve the patient’s future prognosis.

In Samadi’s view, Mitt Romney has a very good chance for a full recovery after his treatment, and his chances of successfully serving in the senate, should he win the race, also look good. Samadi also notes that Colin Powell and John Kerry both underwent successful surgical treatment for prostate cancer, and then went on to continue their political careers.

It is Dr. Samadi’s view that any patient who is dealing with this type of cancer should work closely with an experienced urologist in order to obtain the best result after treatment.
