Recently George Soros donated $18 billion dollars to the Open Society Foundations.
Open Society was founded by George Soros thirty years ago. The foundation is a series of organizations that work together to promote democracy basic human rights in over one hundred countries throughout multiple continents. Currently, Open Society is the largest funded philanthropic organization in the United States, second only to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The $18 billion donation came in a series of funds transfers over the past few years. However, it was only recently announced. George Soros prides himself on contributing to causes he believes in quietly. He rarely promotes his philanthropic activities and instead focuses on driving concrete change.
While the Open Society Foundations works in hundreds of countries, the organization has recently turned a great deal of its focus to the United States. George Soros has seen the turmoil going on in the United States and is utilizing his financial means to help people who are being victimized. Specifically, Open Society is focused on ensuring that police abuse does not continue and that the gay community has equal rights. The Open Society has done incredible things, including working through a network to ensure that when a shooting of unarmed black people occurs it is not swept under the rug. Open Society works tirelessly to keep acts of injustice like this at the forefront of the news and political discussion. Due to the fact that it is a network of organizations, Open Society is able to leverage a variety of means to accomplish its goals.
George Soros grew up in Nazi-occupied Hungary. From an early age he knew what it was like to live without basic human rights. His family fled from Hungary. From then on, he dedicated his life to striving to end injustice and make sure that people everywhere have their basic rights. He then went on to study economics in London and saw that by becomming successful with finance he could utilize his wealth to bring about real change and to help protect human rights. In addition to contributing to organizations that protect human rights, Soros also funds legal issues that do the same. He frequently contributes to lawyers and cases where someone is being accused of something that violates their basic rights. This can include police injustice or overall persecution that is injust.
His latest donation of $18 billion will go a long way to fueling that goal. Open Society does a great deal of work outside of the United States as well.
