La Frontera Fund was created by two journalists Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, due to a series of conflicts. Their independent newsletter was under fire after topics included the sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio. Their writing included data from a large case of jury group discussions. This led to the illegal arrests of the two journalists.
After the arrests, Both Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey followed up for their illegal treatment by the police of the Maricopa area and sheriff Joe Arpaio. They each funded their trials with money they had earned from infamous jobs to spend on their legal affairs against the illegal activities of the establishment. They ended the case as victors in the eyes of the US Court of Appeal, which led to the settlement that would be the foundation of La Frontera Fund. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are both longtime journalists and former owners of the alternative weekly newspaper, Village Voice Media. The duo recently launched an exclusively online news site called Front Page Confidential where they share media stories, historical perspectives and commentary relating to the freedom of speech and First Amendment rights. Larkin and Lacey’s First Amendment rights were violated back in 2007, after the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio, had illegally detained them in two separate county jails.
The uncouth ex-sheriff was known for racially profiling Latino drivers in the Arizona county that was almost predominately Latino American. At one point a federal district judge had ordered Joe Arpaio to stop targeting and unfairly profiling Latinos, violating their civil rights. Larkin and Lacey published a huge story on the sheriff’s racial profiling activities and that allegedly set him off. Arpaio unleashed his ‘Selective Enforcement Unit’ on the journalists and they were placed inside unmarked vehicles with Mexican plates and arrested without probable cause.
The journalist immediately took it to court and sued Joe Arpaio, it was later revealed that Larkin and Lacey were paid a total of $3.75 million by the county to settle. Larkin and Lacey used most of the settlement to support their charitable cause through the Frontera Fund. The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund was created to provide support to the Latino and Hispanic communities in the entire state of Arizona. They have given grants to every legit charitable organization that supports pro-Latino and migrant rights. The Frontera Fund is hoping to make Arizona a safe haven for migrants and Latino Americans in general and undo the corruptions of Joe Arpaio and his former police force.
