Securus Technologies employs approximately 1,000 people and has had contracts with more than 2,600 correctional facilities. In October 2016, Securus Technologies announced that it had acquired Guarded Exchange, LLC of Jefferson City Missouri, for an undisclosed all-cash purchase fee.
Securus Technologies recently received accreditation from Better Business Bureau (BBB). Securus had met the BBB accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make good faith and effort to resolve any consumer complaints.
In June 2016, Securus Technologies announced that it would release reports over the next six months that expose Global Tel Link over their actions that lacked integrity. The CEO of Securus Technologies, Richard Smith, said that he was disappointed that the entire industry could stoop below the integrity bar. He explained that the purpose of their business is not motivated about making money but serving their customers satisfactorily.
Securus Technologies accused GTL of integrity breaches when they provided telecom services at the Louisiana Department of Corrections. The report said that GTL had programmed their clocks at the correctional facility to add either 15 or 36 seconds to the initial call duration. GTL had also programmed their rate calls at higher rates than those permitted under their tariffs. Moreover, they artificially inflated charges to customers by adding various amounts of money. The company also billed calls more than once. All of their actions were deliberate, unlawful, and caused Louisiana taxpayers to be overcharged $1,243,000. Richard Smith concluded by saying that even though these integrity breaches were committed in the past, time alone wasn’t sufficient to wash away GTL’s sins.
